How To Change Your Mind To Change Your Life

Do you feel disillusioned and side-tracked? Do you feel like you need to make some changes to get back on the correct path–like you need to change your life, so you can feel happy, satisfied, and passionate? I sure did, and it seemed disillusionment came out of nowhere and hit me like a ton of bricks.

I am a wife, working mom, vice president of an entertainment company, mom-taxi for my competitive gymnast daughter, pseudo manager for my teenage daughter’s career, friend, and neighbor. I’m sure like many of you out there, I was feeling overwhelmed, overworked, underappreciated, and, quite frankly, just blue. About a year ago, I started a personal journey to change those feelings for good.

Negative thoughts create a negative life experience

After much soul-searching and trying to get to the root of my disillusionment, I realized what I really needed to change was my mind. I had become increasingly negative, expected the worst, and didn’t feel hopeful. It was the first time ever for me. I was always known as the Pollyanna amongst my peers. And suddenly I seemed to have lost myself. I decided I needed a “mindset” overhaul. I believe if we change our minds, we can change our lives. Our thoughts become our actions. Actions become our present. The present is the foundation for our future.

I have been very fortunate in my life. My work is what I’m passionate about. I’ve met the man of my dreams, have a beautiful family, and wonderful friends. I got to travel the world, really had a life that anyone would have been thrilled with and I was! Little by little and for no obvious reason, negativity & hopelessness started creeping into my every day. One day I woke up and those were the only things I was feeling anymore. I decided to take charge, take action, and try my best to make a change for the better. We only get one life. I wanted mine to be the best it could be! It was time to change my mind, and change my life.

How to change your mind so you can change your life:

1. Consciously make the choice to change your mind.

That one decision has had an incredible impact. It sounds so simple, right? But, sometimes the most difficult thing to change is your mindset.

2. Start small

I started with one small mental exercise every day… Do one thing to make myself and someone else smile. After several days of starting with that small task, I couldn’t believe the difference it was starting to make.

3. Start off your day by moving your body

I needed to move more, get more physical exercise. So, I challenged myself to get moving. I knew it was the right thing to do, for my health and my energy. But, I would always find an excuse not to do it. Once I made up my mind that I was going to take this next step and do it in small chunks, I was able to achieve it. 

I decided to wake my youngest daughter up for school and while she was getting ready, take that 30 minutes and walk! Every day before driving her to school, I went for that walk. Before I knew it, it was a habit and enjoyable. I could listen to music, listen to an audiobook, and make other short-term goals for myself. 30 whole minutes were all mind at the beginning of the day, before starting all of my other obligations. I cannot tell you the difference it made in me. It’s something we can all do, we don’t need a fancy gym membership or to spend a lot of money and it can/ will make a substantial difference in your everyday attitude!

4. Challenge yourself to eat more energizing foods, and/or less draining foods like sugar

I took a look at my diet and made my mind up to make some changes there as well. I gave up alcohol and sugar for 8 weeks. That was a tough one, but I made up my mind to just take it one day at a time! I love my sweets and I love my wine, but I was not happy with the weight I had gained. After 8 weeks I lost 16 pounds and feel great! It’s not about being skinny (I’m NOT). It’s about the way I feel, the energy I have, the fact I feel better in my clothes. All of that combined with the movement and mindset has really just made me feel better all around! Back to my Pollyanna self.

So, change your mind and change your life! You can ABSOLUTELY do it. You’ll be so happy you made the effort!
