WEINBERG CENTER SILENT FILM SERIES
A jazz-loving wife kills her boyfriend after he deserts her.
Experience the glam, grit, and dark wit of the Roaring Twenties in Chicago (1927), a silent-era film that laid the groundwork for the hit Broadway musical and Oscar-winning remake. With live Wurlitzer organ accompaniment and a restored 35mm print, this screening offers a rare opportunity to enjoy the original noir-tinged story that first introduced audiences to Roxie Hart and her scandalous tale of love, murder, and media frenzy.
Based on a true crime story, the movie is about a wild jazz-loving and boozing wife who kills her boyfriend in cold blood after he leaves her, and how she finagles her way out being convicted. Remade once as a movie and as a Broadway musical.
STARS: Phyllis Haver, Victor Varconi, Virginia Bradford
RUNTIME: 105 min
GENRE: Comedy, Crime, Drama, Musical
This show is part of the Silent Film Series, celebrating scores and classic films. When the lights go down and the Mighty Wurlitzer rises from the orchestra pit, audiences are treated to a live organ performance featuring Tedde Gibson—complete with a short musical set before the credits roll and a brief introduction to each silent film. Our beloved Wurlitzer turns 99 this December, having filled the theater with music for nearly a century. The Weinberg Center, located in the heart of Downtown Frederick, MD, offers a historic venue and classic atmosphere for a memorable film experience.
