When we think of yoga, we often think of sitting on a mat or moving through poses in a dimly lit room with meditative music playing in the background, but have you ever heard of face yoga?

Face yoga is a natural practice that includes facial exercises to tone muscles, improve complexion, and smooth wrinkles. It’s a more holistic approach for those who would like to avoid fillers or injectables to improve the look of their skin. Muscles lose mass and volume with age, so strengthening your face muscles through face yoga can help the muscles and skin to tighten, giving you a more youthful look again.

Face yoga increases the blood and oxygen levels to your skin, which will improve the overall look and health of your skin. It helps to ease tension and tighten the skin, too. After a few weeks of this practice, you will start to see a difference.

How to get started?

You can start by giving yourself a facial massage, but instead of using your fingers, tap with your finger pads and flat hands. Begin at the clavicles, move to the shoulders, up to the jaw, sides of the neck, and continue tapping down the back of the neck. Go to the hairline and tap down to the brows, then tap very lightly under the eye area. How does that feel?

Face yoga not only improves the look of your skin, but it can also help to relieve stress and tension from your body. 

Here are three exercises that you can try today to help release stress:

  1. Place your index and middle finger on top of each eyebrow, putting pressure on your eyebrows. Close and open your eyes 10 times. Notice the tension leaving your face
  2. Create an “O” shape with your mouth, elongating your cheeks and jawline. Place your hands on either side of your cheeks. Open and close your mouth ten times.
  3. If you experience stress headaches, place your index and middle finger on your temples above your eyebrows. Gently massage in circular motions to reduce tension.
