how to get a raise

It’s more important than ever to self advocate, invest in yourself, and set yourself up for success – both financially and emotionally. If you’re one of those women who gets things done, solves problems, and works hard, then you’re in great company. Most women are problem solvers, and excel at it. Women are also more hesitant to personally take credit for a job well done, instead they commend the whole team. While it’s amazing to include your co-workers, it’s also time to take credit for a job well done. You need to step into the spotlight, be your own cheerleader, and get what you’re worth.

This is the year be the person that you always wanted to be. In order to be that person, you will need to self advocate. Use the following tips to be your own cheerleader and make sure that you are getting the recognition, and financial credit, you deserve.

Ask your boss for a raise

With inflation on the incline, it’s important to make sure that you are paid for the value that you bring to your organization. Chances are, you have never asked your boss for a raise. If you’re like most people, you haven’t even talked about your salary at all outside of your yearly review. Today is a new day. With inflation clocking in at close to 6%, it’s time to make sure that you’re getting paid what you’re worth.

Schedule a separate conversation with your boss to discuss salary and compensation. If you’ve been a substantial contributor to your organization, compensation should reflect that. Don’t be embarrassed to ask for a raise. What do you have to lose? If you get nervous doing those types of meetings, make a script for yourself and practice it a few times before the meeting. Also, make sure you’ve gathered concrete evidence so they can easily say yes to that raise.

Set lofty goals for yourself

Don’t be afraid to set high goals for yourself. Set the bar high, spend some time thinking and dreaming about what you really want and how you can turn this dream into a reality. You deserve to achieve all of your dreams and more.

If you haven’t already set goals for the year, do it now. Write down what you really want. Include those scary goals and dreams. How can you get closer to accomplishing those goals? If nothing else, take a baby step in that direction.

Step into the spotlight

For many women, the idea of leveling up, showing up, and becoming more visible is a scary prospect. Ask yourself this question: Are your current actions keeping you where you are today? Are they keeping you safe (and small)? Or are they challenging you to improve? These are just a few ways you can be your own advocate. As much as it is comfortable to continue on the safe path, the safe path doesn’t allow for self-improvement. Once you begin to self advocate, it will become second nature. Take the leap, step off the safe path and step into the spotlight.
