Mirror, mirror on the wall….if you think having a designated makeup space is the stuff of fairy tales, think again! It’s possible to create a gorgeous, fully functional space to apply makeup like a queen, even if you don’t live in a castle!

Location, location, location
We can hear you protesting, you’d love to have a makeup room, vanity or really any spot to sit and give yourself a little “me” time but there’s just no room! We bet there is, if you think beyond the box.
How about a corner in your bedroom? Bonus points if it’s next to a window with lots of natural light! Is there a small alcove in your bathroom? Move that hamper and insert a makeup table! Take a few shelves out of your closet, add a mirror, a small stool, some lights and viola! As they say, where there’s a will, there’s a way.
It’s all about that base
Once you’ve picked a suitable location, it’s time to choose a base for your makeup station. This can be determined by the amount of space you have allotted, budget and personal style.
Perhaps you have a work-from-home desk, but you’ve returned to the office. Repurpose it for your new makeup space! If antiques are more your thing, search thrift stores for an antique vanity to fix up. Going for a more glam vibe? Shop for a makeup vanity with a mix of metal and glass.
Lights, camera, action
Okay, so this isn’t quite a movie set….but you should feel like a star! Lighting is key when it comes to make up application so don’t skimp on this step. Are you ready for your close up? Natural lighting is ideal so if you can find a spot by a window, good for you. But, as anyone who has ever tried to put on eyeliner using the rearview mirror knows, natural light is not the only thing that matters!
LED lighting is great because you can get lights that allow you to choose warm or cool tones. Many mirrors come with built in lights which is another great option. Adding a relatively inexpensive ring light or two to eliminate shadows is also a good idea.
Have a seat
Choose a comfortable chair or stool. Your makeup station is supposed to make applying makeup more convenient, you don’t want to be twisting and turning in an uncomfortable chair!
To dress it up a bit, try adding a fun rug under your seat. This will add a bit of flair while allowing you to sit more comfortably.
Get Organized
Now that you’ve created a space devoted to makeup and skincare, it’s important to make sure your products are organized, labeled and stored conveniently.
Clear acrylic bins create great storage and make items easy to identify. You may store similar products together or find a system that works for you, like a bin for everyday makeup and another for evening products.
A train case is a great option if you are going for a vintage vibe. These chic classic Hollywood organizers hold a ton of products!
If space is limited, try a hanging organizer. This can be a great option for a small space–and some even come with a mirror!
Consider installing an outlet nearby for hair styling tools. This is just another way to make your makeup station more useful and keep your beauty tools together.
Makeup is used to make us feel more beautiful, more confident and as a way to show off our personal style. Designing a makeup application space should be as inspiring and unique as the person sitting in front of the mirror! Making a space to call your own can be the confidence boost you need to take on the day!
