1) Annapolis Rock – 5.0mi (Knoxville)

When it comes to Maryland hiking trails, the Annapolis Rock trail, located in South Mountain State Park, is a spectacular out-and-back route. 3) Billy Goat – 1.7mi (Potomac)

Billy Goat Trail (Section A), found in the C&O Canal National Historical Park, features beautiful views of the Potomac River. The 1.7mi trail can be made into a 3.7mi loop when you return via the C&O towpath. This hike caters to more experienced hikers, as it includes some strenuous rocky areas, but the scenery is sure to keep you going! Hiking boots recommended.

4) Wolf Rock and Chimney Rock – 3.8mi (Thurmont)

Wolf Rock and Chimney Rock is a loop trail that is notably well marked and includes two great lookout spots. Located in Catoctin Mountain Park, this hike showcases peculiar rock formations and a fairly steep incline that’ll have you breaking a sweat. Many hikers note this trail as one of the top options in the state.
 

5) Weverton Cliffs – 1.9mi (Knoxville)

Weverton Cliffs is an out-and-back hike in South Mountain State Park described by hikers as steep but manageable. This trail is great for an afternoon activity, functioning as a shorter alternative to Annapolis Rock, which is also in South Mountain Park.

6) Walls-Cook – 2.5mi (Bel Air)

The Walls-Cook trail is a peaceful out-and-back route in Prospect Mill Park. This hike is great for beginners and families, features several bridges, and is adjacent to the Harford Community College Planetarium. The path is bike-friendly, and many visitors have enjoyed jogging along it as well.
 

7) Calvert Cliffs – 4.0mi (Lusby)

The Red Trail in Calvert Cliffs State Park includes a sandy, quarter mile stretch along the picturesque Chesapeake Bay. The cliffs are known for their deposits of prehistoric remains, including fossils of ancient sharks and seabirds. Although the hike is an out-and-back format, the beach serves as a delightful midpoint, and you may try your luck at fossil hunting during a break amid your trek.

The Northern Peaks trail up Sugarloaf Mountain has an elevation gain of 1,473 feet and breathtaking views of the Potomac River. This loop hike is rated a moderate difficulty, but proper footwear is advised due to the rockiness of the trail. Trekkers are welcome to customize their own route thanks to the many path options.
