How did you get to where you are today?
I watched my mother work so hard her whole life to give my brothers and I every opportunity she possibly could. She instilled in me hard work and perseverance. I would say – I work hard and don’t take ‘no’ for an answer.
Who has made an impact on you?
My mother and my aunties. I grew up with strong women who are not afraid of a challenge and not afraid to dream bigger. And, of course, the nurses who have cared for my loved ones throughout my life and inspired me to start a brand just for them… They truly are the unsung heroes of the medical profession.
What do you think has helped you the most with your success?
I am a natural problem solver, so I am always looking for new ways to overcome obstacles. I am also an optimist who is not afraid to ask for more.
What has been the biggest challenge you have overcome?
My biggest challenge was overcoming impostor syndrome. I think this is something many women struggle with. It’s time to change that.
What are you most proud of?
I am so proud of the team and community I have built around Moxie, and being able to say that not only are we still here – we are thriving!
What are three pieces of advice you could give to our readers?
- Work hard, but work smart by keeping your eye on the prize.
- Don’t be afraid to ask for what you need.
- Always show up! (Ladies, keep showing up! ‘If there isn’t a seat at the table’ make your own).
How do you try to make an impact?
At Moxie we strive every day to give nurses and medical professionals the respect and comfort that they deserve. I’m really proud of us for recently establishing the Moxie Scrubs Foundation to provide nursing scholarships to help in bringing new nurses into the profession, and to support nurses’ mental health and fight burnout. As an entrepreneur, I dedicate time regularly to mentoring other aspiring entrepreneurs, and as a person, I live with compassion and support for those I meet and who are in my life. Charity starts at home and it costs nothing to be kind.
How do you reward yourself when you’ve reached a goal or after a hard day of work?
This is something I’m working on at the moment because I never stop. But, don’t get me wrong; the lack of traditional rewards doesn’t mean a lack of fulfillment. Quite the opposite – I find immense joy and satisfaction in every step of this journey. Every day feels like I’m living my dream and the best part is that I get to work with amazing people. I wouldn’t have it any other way. I’m grateful every day.
Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
Understand that challenges are temporary and success is not a linear path. Embrace YOUR journey and be compassionate to yourself. Your wildest dreams can come true, but it starts with you. You can do it.
